Ed Stafford Biography

Edward James Stafford, better known as Ed Stafford is a British explorer, Discovery Channel show host, and holder of Guinness World Record for being the first-ever person to walk the length of the Amazon River. Stafford has previously served in the British Army during his earlier days has risen to the rank of Captain

Stafford enlisted in the British Army as a Second Lieutenant after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in September 1998. Stafford served in the Devon and Dorset Regiment for a period of three years. While at the regiment, he rose to the rank of Captain before eventually retiring in 2002 to quench his thirst for adventure.

He became the first person to walk the full length of the Amazon River on August 9, 2010, as shown in the 2011 Channel 5 TV series Walking the Amazon. Stafford’s journey began on the southern coast of Peru on April 2, 2008, with a friend, Luke Collyer. Unfortunately, three months into the challenge, Collyer left, and Stafford finished the voyage with his guide, Gadiel “Cho” Sánchez Rivera. He attempted it for a number of nonprofits. 

In his adventuring career, he has been named National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year in March 2011 as well as European Adventurer of the Year. Stafford was also honored by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society with the Mungo Park Medal in 2011. However, he did not receive the prize until 2014, at a ceremony in Perth, Scotland.
